On October 28, USDA confirmed Arizona's first case of New World screwworm (NWS) in a dog in Cochise County.
New World screwworm can affect dogs, cats, horses, wildlife, and people. Its larvae feed on living tissue, causing serious injury and suffering.
The detection has prompted increased surveillance and animal-movement restrictions in affected areas.

🐾 WHAT PET OWNERS NEED TO KNOW
✅ Visit your veterinarian before interstate travel, whether traveling by car, airplane, train, or another means of transportation.
✅ Check your destination state's animal-entry requirements. A health certificate (Certificate of Veterinary Inspection) and additional documentation or movement authorization may be required.
✅ Check your pet regularly for wounds or unusual skin lesions, especially if you live in or travel through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, or surrounding regions.
✅ Seek veterinary care promptly if you notice wounds, unusual skin lesions, or larvae.
✅ Plan ahead! Requirements may change as new cases are identified.

VETERINARIANS: YOUR ROLE MATTERS!
Stay informed about emerging animal-health threats, recognize and report suspected NWS cases, and help pet owners understand interstate travel requirements.
Sharing accurate information with veterinarians and pet owners helps protect animal health, prevent disease spread, and safeguard animal welfare.
Pet travel preparation involves more than obtaining a health certificate.
