Beginning August 3, 2026, Mexico will require new New World screwworm documentation for dogs and pet birds traveling from the United States.
Dogs
- Examination by a USDA-accredited veterinarian
- Official NWS certificate issued within five days of entry
- No screwworm infestation or fresh/healing wounds
- USDA APHIS endorsement is not required
Cats
- No new NWS certificate required
- Still subject to inspection on arrival
- Airline requirements may differ
Pet birds
- NWS inspection addendum completed within five days
- APHIS-endorsed veterinary health certificate required
Use a clean carrier. Mexico may remove disposable bedding, toys, and excess food during inspection.
Do not forget the return trip. Dogs returning to the United States from Mexico must meet applicable USDA APHIS screwworm requirements and CDC dog-entry requirements. Plan for re-entry before leaving the United States.
